What Sandbag Weight Should I Use?

Sandbag is a versatile tool that can activates your stabilizer muscles building strength and burning fat. But to achieve your goals, it’s important to use the right weight which depends on your ability level, training experience, and purpose. Luckily, you yourself can vary the weight of your sandbag adding or removing the filler bags.

So, to build your strength, add weight to your sandbag but do lower rep sets. If you are looking for conditional training, use a lighter sandbag and add reps and intensity.

30-Minute Full-Body Sandbag Workout

Perform 4 sets of each exercise. Rest no more than 30 sec in-between the exercises.

1) Sandbag Squat 

Reps: 12

Set: 4

2) Sandbag Plank and Pull

Reps: 8 pulls each side

Set: 4

Note: You can put your feet wider apart for more stability. Do not let your hips go up in the air or sag toward the ground. Stay in a straight line.

3) Rotational Lunge

Reps: 10 each side

Set: 4

Note: Engage your glutes and don’t lean forward.

4) Sandbag Deadlift

Reps: 10-12

Set: 4

5) Sandbag Bent Over Rows

Reps: 12

Set: 4

6) Sandbag Lateral Lunges

Reps: 10 each leg

Set: 4

7) Sandbag High Pull

Reps: 10

Set: 4

Note: Do not flex the back. The bag should stay close to the body throughout entire movement.

8) Sandbag Bear Hug Squat

Reps: 10

Set: 4

Note: Do not round your back. Keep the sandbag in tight to your body.

9) Sandbag Swings

Reps: 12

Set: 4

Note: Don’t bring it too high not to lose control.

10) Sandbag Up Downs

Reps: 6 on each side

Set: 4

D.I.Y Sandbag

Don’t want to spend $100 on a sandbag? Here is how to make it less than for 30$.   

You’ll need: 

Play sand (available at most hardware stores)
4 large garbage bags
Duct tape
2 sturdy duffel bags

How to make a sandbag:

  1. Fill the garbage bag with a sand leaving enough room for it to move around and seal the top with duct tape.
  2. Put the first sand filler into a second garbage bag and seal them both with duct tape.
  3. Place the double-bagged sand filler inside a duffel and zip it shut. To add security, you can duct-tape the zipper.
